1951-2006: Entertainer Gary Bautista, 54

By Wayne Harada
Advertiser Entertainment Writer

Singer Gary Bautista, a master impressionist with the Society of Seven group who once was hailed as "the man with a thousand voices," died yesterday in Los Angeles, following a heart attack and stroke Saturday while doing a private show. He was 54.

"He went down surrounded by the people who love him and doing what he loved — performing," said Tony Ruivivar, leader and founder of the SOS group.

The death stunned Hawai'i's entertainment community.

"What a shock," said Don Ho, who is recovering from heart-related problems himself. "The guy was so talented. The man is the group, are you serious? Just awesome. Irreplaceable — that's the word. I tried to steal him a long time ago, in my mind; of course I wouldn't do it. But he could sing."

"Of all the entertainers I've met, he was one of the gentlest, sweetest and most talented," singer Jimmy Borges said. "Of all the lead singers in the group, I thought Gary was the best because he was so eclectic. He could do everything and had a magnificent quality. I will miss him very much. To me he was the gentle soul of the SOS."

Bautista joined the original Society of Seven in 1984. Over the years, he developed a collection of impersonations that became his trademark when the group performed at the Outrigger Waikiki's Main Showroom. His impressions included Willie Nelson and Luciano Pavarotti, Johnny Mathis and Louis Armstrong, Carol Channing and Julie Andrews — even such offbeat characters as Popeye and the Cookie Monster. He often donned wigs and costumes to enact outrageous personalities such as Carmen Miranda and Cher, and was noted for the SOS' "Twelve Days of Christmas" seasonal parody, during which he enacted a "voice" for each of the verses.

One of his iconic impersonations, of Elvis Presley, wound up on CBS' "Magnum P.I." in 1985.

Bautista had a history of heart-related problems, according to Frances Kirk, director of Outrigger Entertainment, and had been taking heart medication.

Bautista lapsed into a coma and was taken off life support yesterday. Upon his death, his organs were harvested and his liver donated to a 24-year-old recipient.

His former wife, Julia, and their children, Jewel and Santino, flew from Honolulu to Los Angeles to join the vigil with the SOS members.

In a press release, Ruivivar said Bautista was a trouper till the end.

"He collapsed at the end of our show, and was still singing on the ground; we had to take the microphone away from him," Ruivivar said.

After his collapse, Bautista was taken to St. Jude Medical Center, where he lapsed into a coma.

Bautista was born in the Philippines and earned his American citizenship while living in Honolulu. He is survived by his wife, Reeza, of Las Vegas; a daughter, Erica, and a son, Garyl, in the Philippines; a daughter, Jewel Bautista, and a stepson, Santino, of Honolulu.

Services are pending in Las Vegas, where the SOS relocated.

The Society of Seven group will be in Honolulu for a golf tournament April 3 to raise funds for Jewel Bautista, 9. Entry forms may be requested by faxing 922-6955. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Friends of Jewel Bautista, c/o Outrigger Entertainment, 150 Ka'iulani Ave., Honolulu, HI 96815.

Ten, Nine, Eight, Seven......

Six, Five, Four, Three, Two, One.....and so it goes.....spoke to my good friend
Van de Guzman the founder of Phase VII and we both couldn't believe how quickly the time has flown by.....Ten days and counting......Van flies in on the red eye from Las Vegas Monday morning......He was going to stay over our house but family and friends have been calling him off the hook asking him to stay with them during the week leading up to the 70s Nightclub Reunion Part II......Phase VII will be minus one, with a lineup of six......Phase VII will be original members Van de Guzman and Hemingway Jasmine joined by Mike de Guzman currently with the SOS LV, and Owen Kajiwara, Dwayne Higa and Brad Choi from our band Greenwood......Van is hard at work memorizing that Smokey Robinson and the Miracles' monster 70s hit "Love Machine"......oh yeah!!! You remember that part don't you???

The Greenwood horns practiced last night.....Last night our trumpet player Miles Ichida's friend Steve joined us.....for this Reunion Part II Greenwood will feature three trumpets, two saxes and a trombone......wow, we're back up to our original number......Ten!!!! It sounded great, Steve is a strong player......Last year's song lineup has been revamped this year to include the hit from that one hit wonder group the "Ides of March", "Vehicle", perhaps one of the greatest hits by the "Tower of Power", "You're Still a Young Man", and perhaps one of the greatest hits by the "Doobie Brothers", "Long Train Running".......interesting note on the horn parts on the "Long Train Running", the parts are modified notes to the TOP song "Soul Vaccination".....cool.........

Look for a front page article about the Nightclub Reunion Part II in Midweek the weekend edition.......Finally, ticket sales are going well, as of about a week ago about thirty tables (three hundred people) have already been sold.....got a funny feeling that this year's event with the strong lineup is going to crack the one thousand mark!!!!! Twenty eight days and counting.......The 70's Nightclub Reunion II

There are twenty eight days in the month of February except during a leap year and it's twenty eight days and counting to the sequel to the 70's Nightclub Reunion. Put in another way it's exactly four weeks from today. Sheesh!!!!! We must be having tons and tons of fun cause the time is sure flying by. Here's an email from Greenwood's leader and coordinator of this event Robin Kimura with the latest on what's happening. Great job Robin!!!! It's gonna be a real Cool Tropical night in paradise four weeks from today!!!!

Hi All!

Happy New Year!

Just wanted to quickly update everyone on what's been going on. We've been
busy preparing the media events to promote the reunion and so far, things
are starting to shape up!

* Today I called Tiny Tadani and he put me on the air to promote the
reunion. We also agreed that on Jan. 31st Tuesday, we would go into his
studio for a simulcast with his radio station and OC16. If a representative
from each band can be present at 7:30 am, we'll have a great time with Tiny
in his studio to promote the event. By that date, most of the musicians
that are coming in form the mainland should be here. I will give you
details as to the studio location as it gets closer.
* I will be having lunch with John Berger next week Friday to discuss
a possible article in the Star-Bulletin, so hopefully that will pan out like
it did on the first go around.
* There are a few more media events that we are planning, so I will be
in touch with all the bands in the weeks to come. If any of the bands are
interested in appearing on the Perry & Price Show on Saturday Jan. 28 at the
John Dominis Restaurant, please let me know. However, I will need an answer
by Wednesday (Jan. 11) of next week to see if a slot is still open.
* Lastly, tickets have been printed and are ready for sale. We have
already sold several tables of 10 so tickets sales look to be going smoothly
at this early stage. Again to remind everyone, this year the Ilikai will
reserve tables on a first come, first serve basis if a table of 10 is
purchased. It has to be under one person's name. If they cannot pick up
the tickets, they will have them waiting at the door, the night of the
event.
* The order of appearance for the night looks like this. Either
Greenwood or New Experience will perform first and second. This will all
depend of the Krush (NE) landing a later gig for the evening. Aura will be
third, Power Point fourth and Phase VII in the "clean-up" spot.

If anyone ahs any questions, please feel free to call me on my cell at
226-9341. The excitement is building we're looking to have another great
event. Take care and I will stay in touch!

Aloha,

Rob

Tower of Power!!!!! Hoooo Hooooo!!!!! Cool!!!!

The Tower of Power.....Now this is one group that has withstood the test of time.....When people talk about funk or horns or a combination of such, the Tower of Power or TOP as they are better known as in some circles, is the name people always think of first.....I remember first hearing this group in my early high school days....Wow, that's over thirty years ago......If I remember correctly their first LP was "East Bay Grease".....Man was that LP different but soooooo good.....Hawaii has been privileged to be frequented by TOP over the past thirty some years and their debut in concert at the Blaisdell Arena as the opening act for Doobie Brothers was so indicative of this band......Dynamite and totally mind blowing....Well, TOP is in concert again at the Blaisdell Arena this Sunday....Man, it's gonna be a blast seeing this all time favorite band!!!!! Now that is cool for sure on a cool tropical Sunday night.....Be there!!!

WHILE MOST people spent New Year's Eve with family and friends, Tower of Power's Emilio Castillo spent most of his weekend driving along California's Highway 20, headed toward Bakersfield.

Where: Castle Theatre, Maui Arts & Cultural Center
Tickets: $25, $35 and $45
Call: 808-242-7469.

Traveling to and from shows is pretty much how Castillo spends all his time, regardless of what the calendar says -- not that he's the type to complain about the hectic pace of touring. After 30-some-odd years in the music business, TOP's co-founder comments frankly about still going strong despite past personal problems, still playing saxophone and singing vocals with many of the other original members in the widely respected soul 'n' funk band.

"What's unique about us is the way we approach it -- the horns don't step on the vocals or the rhythm," he said.

But, as he noted via cell phone call, "We've had ton of members. It's kind of like a college: People come in and leave, get better, and go on to become even better musicians."

A few members in the 10-piece unit now live in Sacramento, while others are in San Francisco and other metro California spots. Castillo himself lives in Scottsdale, Ariz., leaving Los Angeles behind after one of the worst earthquakes in U.S. history struck the region in January 1999.

While TOP was once synonymous with Oakland, "not many of us are there anymore," said Castillo.

Castillo calls himself a God-centered person, a person who's happily married to his second wife, with five children between this and his first marriage. He said he is a much different person from the young man who got into soul music a little more than 37 years ago in Fremont.

Think of the rock 'n' roll cliché: drugs and alcohol, if not for the sex and rock 'n' roll scandals. "I'm not one of those people interested in cheating on their wife. There's nothing about that lifestyle that appeals to me. ... (But) there was a lot of years I was a drug addict, an alcoholic. (It got to a point) I couldn't get drunk, get high anymore. I was spending all my money; health was going down the tubes. I went to a treatment facility and got into a 12-step program."

(The current TOP line-up includes: Mike Bogart, Adolfo Acosta, Jeff Tamelier, Emilio Castillo, Roger Smith, Rocco Prestia, Stephen "Doc" Kupka, Tom Politzer, Larry Braggs and David Garibaldi)

ALTHOUGH HE SAID it was a gradual process of recognizing he wanted a sober lifestyle, he can vividly remember the day he got clean: Feb. 20, 1988.
"(The drug and alcohol abuse was) during my first marriage. My second wife and kids have never seen it." By talking about his prior substance abuse and his current spirituality, Castillo said he wants "to serve God, and be a service to people."

As for TOP's music, "we don't do anything real quick. We've gradually gotten better. And with (original member) 'Doc' Kupka and I getting sober and clean, we're a better band because of it. We probably wouldn't be together if I wasn't sober and clean. I wouldn't be in this band anymore. I probably wouldn't be alive anymore."

(Also take into account former member Victor Conte who, as founder and president of BALCO, was sentenced to eight months in October for his role as the man behind a scheme to provide professional athletes with undetectable performance-enhancing drugs.)

Tower of Power has scored several successful recording contracts over its long career because they were the rare band whose music wasn't outwardly affected by personal problems.

"Smaller labels are no better, no worse. But with smaller labels, there's more attention. ... Everyone wanted to be on the big labels back in the 1990s, but by 2000, (you realized) Sony was taking all the money. We don't see a lot of mechanical royalties, but songwriting and production, yes."

As for the integrity of TOP's music (which has earned accolades from Ray Charles and other greats), "We make music real selfishly. We make it to please us," said Castillo. "We write slow, we'll go to record it, and realize we have a year's worth of bookings to do."

NEXT UP FOR TOP are three new projects, one of which may be picked up by Starbucks, and all of which are due out by the end of 2006: an album of new material, a DVD of live concert footage and interviews in Germany; and an album of old soul covers "we used to play when we were kids. It's the first time we ever recorded other people's music."

Castillo is still amazed by the legions who have tuned in to the Tower.

"We got the best fans, die-hards. We've played Vegas, Sweden, Italy ... and people get so excited. ... But it never fails. I'll be on an airplane and it will come up that I'm a musician. I'll be asked, 'Did you ever play in town?' and I'll say I have a band that's called TOP, and I'll get that look (of recognition) from the one on the right, but the one on the left will say 'Who?'"

Another Review of Aaron Aranita's Newest CD.....

from the internet jazz website AllAboutJazz.Com.....hooo hooo!!!!! Cool!!!!

Aaron Aranita
Don't Stop The Feeling
[Sugartown Records]
Review by LB
Date: Oct, 2005 [14 Tracks 74:52 Total-Spin-Time]

This cd is for those who are looking for a taste of retro with a hint of Brazilian influenced jazz. “Don’t Stop the Feeling” is a collection of sorts. It spans the years of 1987-2005 and includes several tracks from Aranita’s “Eastbound” album. All 14 tracks are original music by Aranita. Since I had never heard of him, this project was a great introduction for me into his music genius.

Aaron Aranita is a superb alto and soprano sax player who even dabbles a little with flutes, keyboards, programming and clarinets. The music covers a wide range of moods due to it spanning three decades. Listeners are given the opportunity to sample different styles of arrangements, which include fusion, contemporary and smooth style of jazz. Even though it took over 17 years to get this project put together, everyone’s playing on the music sounds fresh and dynamic. There are many talented guest musicians with notable mention going out to Valery Ponomarev on trumpet and Peter Horvath on keyboards.

There is a lot of music to digest here, which is always good. “Don’t Stop the Feeling” is Aaron’s attempt to spread love, harmony, and peace through his music and this listener feels he has accomplished that mission.

Hawaii, No Ka Oi!!!!

Never thought this possible, but it's official. The number one quarterback in college football in the year 2005 was Colt Brennan from the University of Hawaii. I thougt for sure that with one bowl game left that Cody Hodges of Texas Tech would overtake Colt. Stranger things though have happened and Cody had a horrible game against Alabama. Now here's where you really start wondering. First of all this was Colt's first year in June Jone's run and shoot offense and he basically came in during fall camp. The first few games there was a rotation of quarterbacks going on. Three out of the four wide receivers were new. Barring any unforeseen injury or perhaps early entry into the NFL draft, things look good for the University of Hawaii for the next two years. Cool, that's cool!!!!!
