The Voice of the Islands returns.....

Danny Couch, unquestionably one of the vocal icons in Hawaii is set to return to a brand new show room on April 4, 2007. This show will no doubt re-establish Danny's presence in Waikiki once again. Backed up by top notch veteran Hawaii musicians such as Hemingway Jasmin, the music no doubt will be totally cool. With the exception of Don Ho and the Society of Seven LV, Hawaii is in need of a show of this caliber. This show is gonna be real cool!!!!

Just amazing what you can find in the closet....

After Robin found some pictures of the old "hanabata days", it kindled an interest in me to see what kinds of stuff I could find from the so called "good old days". Here's something interesting, a picture of Asian Blend that must be at least thirty something years old when they were the house band at "The Foxy Lady 2" nightclub at the Waikiki Beachcomber Hotel. Cool!!!

Once upon a time.......

One of the reasons why Candy Au and Robin Kimura came up with the idea for the 70's Nightclub Reunion was to get together as many bands and their original bandmembers that played in the 70's danceband/nightclub era and to give everyone who lived during those days a night to go back to a time that was so cool. Not unlike class reunions it's just cool to see everyone, think back and just fondly remember a time when life was a little bit more "carefree", even though the brain cells might just be a step or two short of being all there.Speaking of memories, check out these photos that were taken about thirty years ago that were found in storage in Robin's closet. Also check out the current pictures of Greenwood drummer Brad Choi and Robin Kimura. Still looking for a current photo of Greenwood's original sax player Wayne Nakamura, but can you say, "Geez!!! They look like kids!!!!". Cool stuff though, and that's what this reunion gig is all about.

Looking for a football team to play?

H20 powerhouse trumpet player Steve Matsumoto along with SOS LV vocalist, trumpet player and frontman Glenn Miyashiro.

Haha!!! Just a little inside joke for those who live in the 50th state. Did I mention that Greenwood is up to eleven? Last year trumpet player extraordinaire Steve Matsumoto, currently the leader of the cool Hawaii band H20, that's short for Hard 2 Oppose and not the chemistry symbol for water, joined the band. This year our band is up to eleven with the addition of Greenwood's orginal saxophone player Wayne Nakamura. That's Wayne standing furthest to the left in a really old picture of Greenwood in its formative years when everyone still had a lot of hair. In addition to Wayne you'll find two current Greenwood members in this picture, Robin Kimura and Owen Kajiwara.

The two additions make for a very full and powerful sound. The lineup for the May 5th event will feature a seven piece horn section with three trumpets, two tenor saxophones, one alto sax and a trombone. Greenwood in this configuration had a dry run playing at a fundraiser at the Hawaii Prince Hotel and it was really, really cool!!!! Welcome back Wayne and as Robin has said on more than a few times, "It's about time!!!"

Greenwood back in the green.....

Just got an email from our bandleader Robin and it's officially Greenwood in "green" for the 70's Nightclub Reunion III. Greenwood, aka the "Men in Black" for the past two reunion events will break from what seemed to have become without any planning on any groups part the color scheme for all the participating bands. Black is the color that helps a bit to make us aging musicians look a tad thinner but we'll be in green this year.
Attached to Robin's email to all of us was Greenwood's songlist for the event this year. Robin is and was always great at putting together a songlist and this year's list is no exception. Once again we'll open up and trumpet in the theme for the evening as the Godfather of Soul James Brown would have so fittingly said, "we're back, huh, so get up offa your thing and then you will feel better!!!!" It's gonna be a one cool tropical night May 5, 2007!!!! "We're Back!!!!"

And the number is........

Three hundred seventy. Yup, got the word from Greenwood's bandleader Robin Kimura who got the word from Candy Au at the Ala Moana Hotel. As of today, Wednesday, March 21, 2007, three hundred seventy tickets have been sold. The main ballroom is more than 1/2 sold out and there's still about forty four days until the actual event. The response in the first twenty one days tickets have been available has been nothing short of amazing.

This year the event welcomes back "Asian Blend" with the DC Horns and Pamela Peterson and emcee extraordinaire Tiny "Nitro" "OC16" Tadani. While on the subject of OC16, be on the lookout for a short segment of "Greenwood" at practice in a secret warehouse in downtown Honolulu on a future "Tiny TV" on "OC16". Will keep you posted on the exact date of the showing as soon as Robin finds out and other cool stuff leading to the May 5th event.

Looking at a Two Night Event?

I don't think anyone ever thought that this annual event would grow so quickly. Just received an email from our bandleader Robin and this is the up to date status of things. Yesterday March 1, 2007 was the official start of ticket sales and the response was just overwhelming. I have a feeling that the entire 580 seats in the ballroom will be sold out in a matter of weeks.....maybe days. Given the event's new home, more intimate setting and the bands that are reforming for the event springing up all over the place, could this mean the 70's Nightclub Reunion event will become a two night event? Now wouldn't that be cool?

Hi All!

Just wanted to update you on ticket sales. Today, March 1st was the official start day for ticket sales. We have sold nearly 200 tickets! As we stated, the room is much smaller than the Ilikai. There will be overflow areas set up in and around the main ballroom but please keep in mind that the Hibiscus Ballroom can only accommodate 580 seats. We have sold 35% of the total seats available in the main ballroom as of this afternoon! Please remind your fans and supporters to call in reservations ASAP as we anticipate a sell out. Should you have any questions, please feel free to call or email me. Reunion III looks to be another successful event!

Aloha!

Rob
